Giving Back Globally
Advocacy for gender equality is a continuous struggle that seeks to elevate the status of women on a global scale. The importance of this global effort cannot be understated. In striving for a global community, this effort necessitates the recognition of challenges faced by others in different contexts. Despite vast experiences there are many commonalities that women experience on a global scale. This article explores the urgency of women’s issues, the role of women’s charities, and how individuals can contribute to meaningful change.
The current challenges for women globally are varied but have common themes. Despite progress, millions of women worldwide still experience severe disparities in the areas of economics, education, healthcare, and discrimination. In terms of economics, women continuously face disparities in pay, resources, and entrepreneurship. Known as the gender pay gap, women on average are paid 83% of what their male counterparts earn. In addition, women are less likely to have access to financial institutions which hampers participation in entrepreneurship. Barriers to education exacerbates the phenomenon of financial exclusion as education can provide the knowledge and connections to use these institutions. Cultural practices can be another barrier to women who wish to achieve higher learning. Healthcare inequalities continue to disproportionately affect women. These problems manifest in an elevated maternal mortality rate. Access to healthcare and akin services can reduce these complications and promote healthier lifestyles. Women also are subject to increased risks of being victims of domestic abuse and human trafficking.
The impact of women’s charities plays a transformative role in combating these issues just described. The Mongolian Quilting Center provides vocational training for women which aims to improve economic conditions. Focusing on hand-crafted and traditional products, the center has larger scale operations and roles that need to be fulfilled. For example, just one project can require the attention of several different women. There are a lot of different inputs that go into these projects. Designing, crafting, promoting, accounting, and the ordering of materials are all vital to the completion of these projects. Beyond stitching and quilt making, the center is making strides in teaching these practical business skills.
The fight for gender equality requires all of us to take action. The Mongolian Quilting Center works tirelessly to uplift marginalized women and girls but they do need support in order to continue their crucial work. There are many ways to help and get involved.
